Can Authorities Cope with the Pace of Autonomous Driving Tech?
The introduction of self-driving is propelling the car industry to re-evaluate standards and procedures in vetting and deploying new safety/security systems are regulated and adopted by officials. Recent accidents concerning many semi-autonomous cars certainly makes the public wonder how the industry is being regulated. Just recently, NHTSA sent a cease and desist order on Tesla’s device that deactivates the safety controls on Autopilot system. This raises worries that authorities can’t seem to cope with the new tech. Corps engaged in self-driving tech like sensors, mapping and pedestrian recognition are required to fulfill a high standard made by organizations like SAE International to accomplish automotive-grade safety standards. Since this is an ever-changing industry, critics worry regulators are a bit delayed/slow in assessing and approving these rules for road readiness. And in other instances, are too inept about new technologies to integrate them into vehicles.
